White people of Seattle, what do you do in your spare time?

Before we get into the downvote hate, I'm a native Seattleite and didn't come here from some place like California.

This is a great city and I've been making some friends, but have not met anyone of European lineage.

Have hung around Belltown and SLU but the locals there are very young where as I am over 40. It is interesting there are many bars here but rarely do I encounter other white males here.

So I am wondering, what does everyone here who is of caucasian culture do? It is hard to go my whole life without speaking to anyone of my home country language sometimes.

Also, should there be a /r/circlejerkseattlewa sub yet? Or is it too soon?

Looking to meet new friends who are into board games!

After posting in r/Seattle someone told me to post this here as well so here it is!

Looking for friends!

I've been living in Seattle for 6 years or so and i'm originally from the east coast where it's a bit easier to make friends, although not as easy to "meet people." I'm a full time working professional, maintaining all that adult crap that i have to do between game sessions. For the last couple of months or so i've been trying to use Meetup.com to find folks. I've had a little luck but i'm a pretty social person when it comes to enjoying my nerd-hobbies and I'm definitely looking to make new friends!

I'm into a variety of board games, but definitely lean towards Dungeon Crawls, Card Games (LCGs, CCGs etc), Thematic games, or some of the lighter Euros. I'm looking for folks who want to play board games but also want to make a new friend for regular play. My partner just started with a masters program so now i have too much time on my hands and too many awesome games sitting on my shelf! Anyone else out there in the same boat or otherwise looking to make a new friend? I'm happy to teach every game i have.

Games I currently am way into;

Descent 2e

Zombicide

Champions of Midgard

Castle Panic

Sentinels of the Multiverse

Lord of the Rings: LCG

Takenoko

Warhammer Quest: The Adventure Card game

Epic: The Card Game

Flashpoint

Marvel Legendary, Legendary Encounters, XenoShyft Onslaught

Defenders of the Realm

Used to play Magic when i was younger, and i enjoy it, but don't care for paying a fortune for all the cards etc. but similar games are cool with me!

Also, I tried looking for some folks on BGG but i'm not sure if it's proper ediquette to reach out to those people etc.

Hope to hear from some folks.

Speeding ticket help from state patrol officer

I currently live in Seattle and I got a speeding ticket in the Clark county district by a state trooper, who does not reside in the Clark or neighboring Vancouver districts (I called and they don't have records of the officer). I've sent the ticket back to the Clark County District Court for a contested hearing to fight the ticket, but I was hoping if I can get some advice on the subject matter to increase my chances of fighting it.

I'm in a situation where if I get the ticket it would cost me over 1k due to a previously deferred ticket. Any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated to help fight this.

There are a couple of odd things I could use. The officer first said I was going 75 (speed limit was 60) , but upon handing me the ticket he said he wrote me up for just 5 over instead of 26 over.

Another thing was that I was following behind a vehicle fairly closely, and both of us pulled over after seeing the lights behind me. He first walked to the car in front of me and waved the car off, then came to me.

X-post from /r/Seattle - House Sitting?

Hello all Seattleites!

I recently relocated to the Seattle area to find a better job (Environmental Biology/Science) and I was living with my one friend who I knew from college since mid-June. Long story short, his girlfriend I believe wants me out for random reasons (always paid my rent) and I was thinking of the house sitting option. Does anyone know of anyone who house sits in Seattle?

I already created a profile on luxuryhousesitting.com, but I don't care about the luxury part. I'm a pretty simple guy just looking to finish up some grad work and not be homeless or unable to pay rent for a few months while I job search.

Thanks in advance.

Exactly what the titles says. My employer has all of our parking spots filled in the garage and doesn't provide orca cards for commuters like myself. And it wasn't through Nordstrom . Anyone have any ideas?

Parking Tickets

Was asked to cross-post this here, and give this sub a shot.

I've noticed that police officers have been waiting for speeding vehicles quite a bit around lately, especially that really long stretch on 15th between Interbay and the Ballard Bridge. I saw 8 cars pulled over by harley cops a couple weekends ago, and today I saw someone pulled over just north of the aurora bridge.

Have any of you guys got a speeding ticket in here? Do the officers bother to fill out a report? Do they show up to court? Just wondering how easy it is to get out of speeding tickets without a lawyer.

Questions for translators in Seattle.

Howdy All.

I got let go this morning and after a good cry while riding my bike I am ready and steeled for the task at hand; searching for a job. For the past few years I've been doing the same thing, and I'm ready for a change of pace! Along with being really good at the thing I've been doing, I'm also bilingual, and seeing as I am a relatively young person, I figure there's no time like the present to try something new. So! I did a bit of research and applied to a few translating positions. It's too early to have heard back already, but I'd like to pick the brains of anyone who has already found success translating here in Seattle.

  • how did you get started?
  • how long did it take before you where making money?
  • what kind of qualifications did you cite?
  • what was your interview process like?
  • what kind of translation work are/where you doing? Video game translating? Some other kind of media? Something in the medical field? Advocacy?

Thanks!

You are a dick if you drive in the emergency lanes. [x-post r/seattle]

On my way home, I saw 2 cars in the 520 emergency lanes. They were getting off on the next exit. Then I saw a 3rd doing the same. None of them were damaged or looked to be any sort of emergency or even related in any way. I have also seen this before once.

If you drive in the emergency lanes, other people will start doing the same. It may seem like, at best, you are helping traffic in the short term, but if everyone uses it as a lane and there is an accident, what's the point of it?

Before anyone tells me to use HERO, I was already writing up the Red Jeep that cut in front of me illegally using the HOV on-ramp that I reported 2 weeks ago for illegally using the HOV on-ramp and then lane. So I didn't think fast enough for a photo of those plates.

Maybe it is just time to give into DOT Satan and join the fun.

[Someone requested I crosspost this from /r/Seattle, so sorry if you see this twice]

Free or low-cost lease agreement templates for renting out a room? (x-post from r/Seattle)

Flying out of SEATAC on early Sunday morning (xposted from /r/Seattle)

Flight departs at 5:40 AM. How early would I need to get there? I know TSA suggests like two hours, but is this necessary?

Also, I'll be in Port Ludlow and would like to travel from there to SEATAC without having to rely on my relatives for travel. Can I get from Port Ludlow, WA to SEATAC reasonably easily for a 5:40AM flight on Sunday morning through public transit/cabs? Initially, I had planned on having relatives drive me to Bremerton and catch the last ferry over to Seattle, then just taking a cab/Uber to SEATAC and then spend the night.

Are there better/easier options?

Things to do while in the area (x-post r/seattle)

Hey everyone, my brother and I will be in western Washington for a few days as we pass through driving my car down from AK on my way to school. We have both spent enough time in the area to the point now where we’ve done all the “touristy” shit and we’re fairly familiar with the area now and I thought I’d come here to ask you guys if there is any cool “local” spots out in the San Juan’s, Olympic Peninsula or in the Seattle area. We’re up for some hikes, outdoors stuff, abandon places that aren’t sketchy or would involve being ticked for trespassing, cool local photo points, nice places to eat, ect.

Thanks for any ideas everyone, much appreciated!

I am coming out to Seattle next month for a weekend. What do I do and with who?

Just looking for some Netflix suggestions... I'll be in town the week of August 22nd, leaving the next Sunday.

What bars should I go to? I'm 24 so I'd prefer a social setting with those around my age. I plan on bar hopping. I prefer something relaxed...no dress codes. I've heard EDM is way popular in Seattle. I love themed bars (i.e. Harry Potter pub, something like that).

What hotel should I stay at? I can use google for this, but figured I put it in here. Looking for something cheap downtown, I don't plan on being in my room much.

Where should I eat? You don't need to ask what I like. I like it all. I had sushi the last time and it was phenomenal. Some mid price range places, nothing 4 stars.

What activities? (i.e. if you came to my hometown I would say go down Vine Street and eat and drink your heart out, take in the city from Bellevue park, get a pedal wagon, fight a homeless person, go see the Cincinnati Reds get their asses beat red, play board games at The Rook, play video games and drink at 16 bit, etc.). I'm pretty nerdy and loved themed bars, anything like that would be cool. Maybe a suggestion for somewhere to take the city in? PLEASE DON'T SUGGEST RIDE THE DUCKS. I've heard some of my coworkers out in Seattle suggest riding the ferry, but what does riding the ferry entail?

Which places should I avoid? (i.e. this places sucks, overhyped, you might get stabbed, etc.)

What's something weird I can do while I'm out here? I've heard Capitol Hill is a hipster's paradise, and while I'm not much of a hipster I enjoy weird stuff.

How should I get around? I won't have vehicle transport. I don't mind walking or paying for ubers. I've heard you have monorails?

Last time I was out I saw the gum wall, hiked up Mt. Si, got a bag of Dick's (food), saw the space needle (didn't go inside), and ate the best sushi I've ever had.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, the hospitality is greatly appreciated. And if anyone wants to be my personal concierge, by all means!

EDIT: I looked at the wiki before posting, it has great suggestions but some of the stuff is old and maybe not tailored for me.

How I voted and why (you won't like it, I have my stupid moments, you have been warned)

Okay, first off, I'm a union worker, so Pramila Jayapal (I don't like her heavy campaigning, but she is a pretty good candidate), Jeff Sprung (no idea) and Cyrus Habib get a free pass (those sun glasses!).

That being said, I did not do a lot of research. I skimmed the voter's guide, looked at the pictures, statements and glanced at the other things. I went over every candidate, not just those who suit my leftist agenda. I checked position descriptions. If there was a republican I thought would work hard to improve the lives of me and my peers, I'd vote for them. I am wanting to judge people on their stances and statements rather than their parties... but it's really hard when the party members all say the same things and the sides trying to get my vote aren't republican.

  • Sam wright : Whatever. He's not part of the big parties and I like what he had to say about medical policy. Probably would have been a good choice for commissioner of public lands considering his knowledge about fish. Would have been neat to have a senator named Thor though (you can see how seriously I'm taking this).

  • Mary Martin : Socialist. Nobody works harder for the common man than a socialist. Hey, it's my vote, I can throw it away if I want to.

  • Tim Turner : Fairly Oddparents... no, actually I picked him because of his previous job experience. He's not applying for a position that requires high moral backbone and compassion (he seems to be doing well in those areas, but we seem to disagree on some politics). Most of secretary of state is numbers and paperwork. Gaming software engineer and nuclear chemist trainer probably indicate a good mind for keeping track of numbers and paperwork.

  • John Paul Comerford: "fiduciary"

  • Bob Ferguson : alternative is a nice enough sounding guy, but he spent nearly the entire statement talking about bipartisan leadership.

  • Mary Verner: one of the few on the list that has actually stated doing something with wildlife. Come on, guys! At least the libertarian worked on a Christmas tree farm!

  • Grazyna Prouty: multi-lingual. Oh sure, translators are a thing, but it's great when people can actually talk to each other directly. A lot of parents in this state don't have English as their first language.

  • Mike Kreidler : Sounds like he's doing a good job. The alternative is a guy that hates the ACA or a guy who basically says he'll do exactly what Mike will do, but from a new face.

  • Cindy Ryu : sigh still nobody better asking for the job.

  • Ruth Kagi : See above answer

  • Zamboni John Scannell : His target of compassion seems more interesting. Again, I can throw my vote away if I want to.

  • Cathy Moore : Struck me as less egotistical than alternatives.

  • 1-2-3 : no. Because I don't care about making the Seattle waterfront more elitist on my dime.

  • prop 1 : yes. Because homelessness sucks. Sure, we could vote no and hope for something better, but in the mean time a lot of people would suffer, Which would likely cause a rush decision that's even worse than what we've got now. Better to let it ride and work on solutions from the inside than just drop it; even for a moment.

And there you have my logic for voting. Simple minded, potentially misdirected, certainly half-cocked and ignorant. But hey, my vote won't make a difference, so I might as well vote for who I want rather than who I think is going to win. Maybe I'm just suffering from voter's fatigue. That's a thing, right?

Public/Subsidized housing? [xposted from the other one per recommendation]

Hi Seattle-ites. I'm a completely solo mom with quite a few kids and bottom barrel income while we're trying to get our bearings after a mess of a family crisis. Up until last year my husband and I were homeowners in an upper middle class neighborhood with amazing schools, typical two parent family with two cars and everything. He made some decisions that changed everything for all of us, so this is my only real option while the kids and I rebuild.

In talking with our case manager, she said we absolutely qualify for subsidized/low income housing and would receive preference because of our income level alone. The waitlist is 1-3 years, so I'm already aware of that, but does anyone here have any experience with Seattle's housing program? Or have any anecdotal information about the specific neighborhoods where the mixed income housing units are located? We would need a 4 or 5 bedroom (I have an adult disabled child, so there's discussion if that allows us a 5bed). If we are allowed any choice whatsoever, I'd like to try and lean towards areas that are less awful, of course. My kids already just got the deck stacked against them in a lot of areas, so finding a stable place to live with decent schools would be a huge help for their future.

I'm reasonably familiar with the issues of public housing and the projects already. About 20 years ago I was a single mom in the projects in another (smaller/shittier) city for a little over a year, until we got back on our feet again. The thing is, crime was incredibly high and the gangs and drugs were rampant. It was an awful place to raise kids, and I only had two little ones at the time. It looks like Seattle has put some effort into making the family public housing areas safer, especially in the mixed income areas, but I'm sure there are still some that are better or worse than others.

In doing some research, it looks like Rainier Vista, NewHolly, and Greenbridge are the best options, but I'm open to any suggestions too. The application lets me pick two property preference areas, so I want to make sure and make the best of a fairly frustrating situation.

Thanks for any help or suggestions, and if there's a better sub for this question let me know.

Landlord store $1450 from me on top of my damage deposit to pay for his floors to be redone. Need advice.

I'll try to sum this up as clearly as possible. I live in Seattle. On May 28th, I sent in a rent check for the month of June. The following day, my landlord cashed it. June 1st he emails me saying he's raising rent. I told him I'd move out as I cannot pay the increase amount. Since I had already paid first/last months rent upon initial move in, I requested the last check to be returned since the last rent had already been paid for. He said he'd lump it into my damage deposit and pet deposit when we move out. Fast forward: we clean the apartment but notice one of our floor plants left a stain from being over-watered. Our landlord took $250 from the damage deposit to get it fixed. He wrote us a check for the remainder, somewhere around $2200. The next day, he cancelled the check saying he wants more money for the damage. I said he could use our the remainder of our damage deposit but requested the pet deposit and duplicate rent check be returned. He returned $700 and said the rest of it was needed to redo the floors. He sent me a quote from a repairman: to replace the floor boards where the stain was would be $300 but to sand/refinish the rest of the floors to match would be $1400. That, plus my landlords time, he's not giving us a penny back. My question is. The duplicate rent check of $1450 is not legally his. He can use my entire damage deposit but he has no right to the $1450 nor the pet deposit. If I take him to small claims court to get that returned to me, is there a chance he can counter-sue for what he claims he needs to fix? Can he counter-sue for more than he actually needs? There was also no check-list upon move in in regards to current damages to the apartment. I was also a dumbass and didn't take pictures before/after. Just wondering if going to small claims court would be worth it or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

[x-post] Any remote employees working for out-of-state companies?

I work from home for a company based out of state. They're doing an audit and just informed me they discovered they might be on the hook for a large WA tax liability from having me here. Anyone know anything about this, or whether your company has the same issue? Seems a bit weird since they aren't really "doing business" here (not selling or making anything, not logging or mining etc). Any info would be great. Thanks!

X-Post from r/Seattle: Thoughts on a Seattle Breakup Support Group/Meetup

(X-Post from: https://redd.it/4ujqj7) I have been thinking about starting a meetup for people who are looking for support for their breakup or who want to support those who are struggling. Full description posted below. Please let me know your thoughts!

"This is a group for people who have been involved in a breakup and are looking for a network of support. You can choose to speak about your situation, offer support to those who need it, or simply listen to the discussion. I am starting this group because everyone experiences the hardships involved with a breakup but not everyone has access to an in-person forum to discuss their situation or hear from others who may be experiencing something similar. Meeting dates/times are still undecided but I think the Seattle Center, a downtown park, or coffee shop would be appropriate locations."

T-Mobile Trouble for Anybody Else in Seattle?

Hi friends!

The last few days my T-Mobile speeds have been atrocious. Like, I just tested at 77 Kbps on LTE. This has been about average for me the last 2-3 days.

I'm on unlimited. And, I work nights, so it's not high traffic. I love in Fremont and work on Harbor Island. My coworker who lives in North Seattle has also reported terrible speeds on T-Mobile recently.

Anybody else having this issue? Just wondering if it's likely them or my device.

▲ 0 ▼ Best universities in Seattle for pre-veterinarian or pre-med? Helps if they are veteran friendly

Hi everyone!

I'm planning on moving to N Tacoma after my enlistment (N of Ft Lewis) and becoming a full time student at one of the universities in Seattle. I would move closer but I have a free place to stay. I'm still indecisive about if I want to go pre-vet or pre-med but I would like to keep the commute within an hour or two.

So what are the best colleges that you know of for these type of programs?? Please direct me to the correct subreddit if this is posted in the wrong one.

Offered job in Burien--where should I live? Can I afford the area? (x-post from Seattle)

I’m a 28 year old single female from the Midwest who was offered a job in a school in Burien. I would definitely like to take it but am a little overwhelmed. Would it be too difficult to live here on a teacher’s salary? Would it be possible/advisable to live in Seattle and commute to Burien? (I’ve read bad things about the traffic). I’d prefer to live in a more urban/happening area with people my age, but realize beggars can’t be choosers.

I’d really appreciate any advice and am hoping I can make this work. Thanks :)

Hey I posted this on /r/Seattle, but very few people were helpful or nice

Hey guys I'm going to be in town from the 26th- the 30th and I've been looking into what I can do online, and on the wiki, and I wanted to hear about some things from the people actually from here.

One thing I love is hiking, but the weather in Dallas being in the 100s all the time makes it difficult. I've looked into hiking, but I don't want to go to a trails with stairs and a tilled path. I'd like something challenging and a little off the beaten path, but worth the reward. Any recommendations which fit that?

Also a big fan of KEXP, and I heard they give tours, and you can hear live music. Anybody personally been, and have an opinion on it? Speaking of music I'm a huge fan of live music, but none of the big bands I enjoy are performing while I'm there as far as I've seen. I enjoy rock, ska, funk, soul, blues, jazz, and plenty of other genres. Any smaller venues with any artists I haven't heard of but might enjoy?

Also anybody just got any general recommendations? I've been reading till my eyes are sore, but I just want to hear about Seattle from the perspective of somebody who actually lives there. I'm not sure I wanna live in Texas for forever, and Washington is a state I've been looking into. I want to be able to see what it's actually like.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) resuming flights to Seattle?

In 2009 when the global economy was struggling and with new competition from Icelandair, Scandinavian Airlines cancelled it's flight from Seattle to Copenhagen, thereby ceasing all direct flights between Scandinavia and the west coast US. Today after the economic rebound in Nordic countries, SAS now flies between Copenhagen and San Francisco and between Stockholm and Los Angeles.

I know we cannot believe everything we read on the internet, but both SeaTac and Copenhagen Airport's wikipedia pages read that SAS now flies between SeaTac's South Satellite Terminal and Copenhagen's Terminal 3. I am fairly confident this was updated within the last month or so.

  1. http://ift.tt/2a0g65B

  2. http://ift.tt/22m22I4

Now this may well be, and probably is, incorrect since I cannot find any information directly from SAS (as opposed to forums) that is actually announcing the resuming of flights. That said, given Seattle's growth and despite continued service from Icelandair creating increased competition for SAS if it were to return, is it possible that SAS may resume flights to Seattle within the next few years? If so, should it be Seattle-Copenhagen? With 2/3 of SAS's Scandinavian hubs (Copenhagen, Stockholm) presently serving west coast cities, should this flight serve Oslo instead?

What is everybody's sense on this?

Um uh uh uh um uh uh um uhm uh uh um um uh uh uh um um um uhhhh um um uh uh um uh um uh uh uh uh um uh ummmm uh uh uh um uh uh um uh uhm uh um uh uh um uh... um uh uh um.

Have you ever considered attending a city council meeting? There may be one about employer scheduling coming up.

I heard somebody say that the July 26th 9:30 AM council meeting titled "Civil Rights, Utilities, Economic Development & Arts" may actually be addressing the controversial topic of advanced schedule planning for employees.

But this should be obvious from the information provided in the name of the scheduled meeting as well as the additional information, agenda and records in the minutes from previous meetings, right?

Seattle's all about civil action and transparency after all. So I'm sure they have put great effort into making the information regarding council activities not only accurate and well maintained for the sake of record keeping, but also rich in general information devoid of legalese to emphasize community involvement.

Tell me of the weird and creepy side of Seattle and Washington State

Hello lovely Seattleites.

I'm due to start running a modern occult horror roleplaying game (Unknown Armies) and my group has decided that they'd like to set it in the Seattle area (and State of Washington.)

We're all from the UK, and our only contact with Seattle is from Fraiser, Grunge Music, Starbucks and the pine hills.

The game is a bit like the X-Files, Twin Peaks, Gravity Falls etc. Supernatural weirdness based on obsession, magical thinking, urban myths and the worry that that whispered gossip might be true "If you play dice in the alley off 5th and Ballard, you can win more than just money - or lose it too!"

If you have any inspiration or links to the weird, creepy or just strange about Seattle and Washington please share it. I've looked at Atlas Obscura and 'Weird Washington' but they're a bit sparse.

Many Thanks.

I have already posted this on r/Seattle, but someone suggested that I repost it here for a broader response.

Simply put I'm not huge into EDM by any means and only know one artist (he's a hip-hop guy performing on a day that I don't plan on going anyways) but I'm only here for the summer so I think it may be a fun experience regardless. I could tolerate the EDM, but I can't say I'd be super psyched about any performance.

Dating Scene for mid-20s woman?

Hello all, I have a job offer in Minneapolis but just received another one in Seattle. I’m leaning toward Seattle but would like to know more about the social/dating scene to help in my decision making as I have read a lot of negative things online about dating there. I'm currently on the east coast and one of the (several) reasons I’d like to leave is the unfavorable male/female ratio. I understand this is better in Seattle, but keep reading things like “the odds are good but the goods are odd” and how much dating sucks for women. If it helps to know, I’m 26, been told I’m very pretty, have a decent career, a little shy but friendly.

I’d appreciate any insights or stories about dating in Seattle, as well as suggestions on where to potentially meet men!

What to do while waiting for Airbnb to be ready? [x-post r/seattle]

Hi there! I'm turning 30 and coming to Seattle tomorrow to celebrate for five days. My SO and I are coming from northern CA, never been to Seattle, and the issue is that our flight gets in at 7:00 a.m. but we can't drop off bags at our Airbnb in Wallingford until 1:00 p.m. and then can't officially check in until 5:00. I would love some suggestions on what we could do in the meantime, keeping in mind that we will each have a piece of carry-on luggage. I'm sure we will at least want coffee and breakfast shortly after arriving, but I don't know what to do after that. Any help is much appreciated!

EDIT: The downtown Nordstrom concierge will check bags for free all day, so we are doing that.

Pointless tagging

So I can appreciate real street art, creative interesting art. But the local taggers are just so beyond pointless.

This weekend I was driving into work. Under I-5, at Cherry there's a chain link fenced area that holds a feeding program for the homeless. Sign says it's sponsored by SDOT & I think the city. There were three different tags on the sign. What is the point of tagging that???

Though I'm also pissed that the kid's sea life mural on 50th has been tagged too.

I've looked in zillow, redfin, and johnlscott at some houses that have for sale signs in my hood (not for sale by owner... but regular signs) and I know of at least 3 that have been for sale for over a week here... and they don't show up on any of these sights? (I'm in Maple Leaf)

Is there a better site that people like to see details of new listings?

Is police sanctioned "mutual combat" in Seattle only related to Phoenix Jones or there are other examples?

If someone was interested in how Seattle officers have sanctioned mutual combat, are the only results im going to find Phoenix Jones? As in, its rare, never really happens anymore and maybe its illegal now? Im aware of what the gist is but just wanted to know if there is more material/content around this theme eg. Phoenix Jones as an example.

Hey Seattle, what's your favorite local museum and why?

Mine is Seattle Asian Art Museum with The Henry as a close second. The traveling shows in both are outstanding. There are many, many close 3rds though.

Girlfriend and I are moving to the Greenlake area in a couple weeks and have a few questions.

We have no furniture and are wondering the best way to acquire cheap, quality stuff. We are also going to have a couple months to enjoy ourselves before school starts and are curious to what type of events/places that we need to visit. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and we are looking forward to joining your wonderful city!

Why is there more traffic going into Seattle from the north between 3-6pm? Do lots of people live in Seattle but work north of Seattle? I thought it would be the opposite.

Doberman friendly apartments

I've asked this before but those places either don't allow my breed or they have no vacancy. So I'm asking again as I'm moving from Florida to Seattle the second week of August. The junction 47 in West Seattle only has one unit available and it's available now and we can't reserve it that far in advanced. We found Altamira across the street but it's a little out dated for our taste but we put in an application because as of right now it's our only option. We have 2 Dobermans a black female that weighs 77 pounds and a red male that weights 107 pounds. If I find a place that allows the breed I'm hit with the 100 pound weight limit. So any help would be much appreciated!

We are building a basement apartment. Seattle Renters: What size bed do you own? Studio or small bedroom, which is better?

xposted from /r/Seattle

We are about to start the process of turning our basement into an ADU (apartment). House is in Ballard. Here is the proposed layout:

http://ift.tt/29ZT8P7

The bathroom already exists, and the kitchenette will be using the plumbing of what used to be a laundry room, so they cannot move. There is also a support pillar right about where the "wall extension" arrow is, so the closet has to be the size it is.

Total square footage of this apt will be just under 500 sq ft (470 or 480 IIRC)

We have two layout options: the studio as is laid out here, or putting in a wall where the red line is and making a bedroom that is 13'11" by 8'11" (making the living room section 13'11" by 11'4", minus the 5 or so inches for a wall).

Obviously we'll get more rent for an apt with a bedroom, but we're sort of concerned that the bedroom might feel/be really small. A full size bed would fit against the 13'11" wall with 2'8" at the end to walk around it, a queen would only fit along the short wall (under the egress window) and would have 3'11" to be split on either side (so just under two feet on each side of the bed).

Someone with a twin or full size (especially a single person that could put the bed in a corner and not a couple) would have more space. Plus the bedroom is much longer than it is wide, so maybe it'll feel bigger anyway? We will be installing can lights and picking light paint colors to make it feel bigger/lighter, but there's only so much you can do in a basement room.

So, Seattle renters: can I pick your brain? Is that bedroom too small for your bedroom furniture? Would you rather rent a studio and have the entire place feel larger? Does making the bedroom make the living room too small? Are we thinking too much? If its a nice apt would you even notice?

Thanks guys.

tl,dr: making basement apartment, concerned proposed bedroom might be too small.

Advice Requested: Possible move to the Seattle Area

So possible moving to the Seattle Area. I saw in the FAQ there used to be a moving master thread but looks like i could only find the 2015 as the newest

Back Story: 2 months ago, while attempting to figure out my wife's knee problem we discovered it was caused by a huge calcified bulging disk. She had to have emergency back surgery and is now paralyzed from the waist down (well the T10 vertebrae actually). She was in rehab for 46 days and we are now back at home (North West Florida Panhandle). In rehab they warned her that due to the spinal cord injury she would have heat control issue and being back at home now for almost 2 weeks we are discovering that. She simple cannot stand the heat and 90%+ humidity here. I have always wanted to move away from here having spent my entire adult life within 40 miles of where we live. While doing some internet searches on areas that the heat was within a good range for my wife and Seattle came up. This was one of the places I have always wanted to visit as well. Brought it up with my mother knowing she had been through there on vacation once. She said of all the places they have ever visited it was one of the top 3 she would move to. My father is retiring within the next year or so and we came up with the plan of moving the whole family up to Seattle or the surrounding area. We are from a fairly small town so we don't think we would like to live in the city directly.

I need some advice on where to start looking. I would like to be within 30-45 mins of "downtown" or whatever might pass as a large area with malls, restaurants, and things of that nature but live in a more suburb type area.

With my parents retiring and wanting to travel they are wanting to buy just one larger house for all of us and have us take care of it while they are away. So we will need at least 3 bedrooms, maybe in the 2000-2500 sq foot range

My dad's requirement is to be within 30min (maybe 45min) drive to an airport encase he decides to do some consulting after he retires.

My wife may start to recover some movement in her legs within the next 2 years and we always enjoyed walks and jogging, so having access to some good trails would be wonderful. We also have a 75lbs 1 year old Weimaraner so would need to be pet friendly area and places I can take to burn her energy, hopefully without a car ride.

I'm in marketing and sales with a background in tech and don't have a job lined up yet and that will be a determining factor as I'll be the only one working, but also don't have a job lined up.

Can someone point me in the right direction of where I might start looking? Looking at a map I was thinking South of Seattle maybe... just don't know.

Looking for a good performance/auto shop near the Renton area.

Hey!

I'm new to Seattle. I just moved here with my fiancée last week. I've always been picky with where I take my cars back in Kebtucky, and since I'm new here I'd figure I'd reach out for some input from you fine folks!

I didn't bring my jack or jack stands with me during the move so I'm temporarily unable to even do my own oil changes. I drive a new Scion FRS and I'd love to find a shop that does great work in repairs, standard maintenance, and even performance tuning (for down the road). I'm just looking to begin that relationship with a shop early on.

Thanks for any and all input!

I have a question for any weather buffs in /r/SeattleWA. What kind of weather scenarios can trigger thunderstorms in Western Washington?

A bot in /r/seattle suggested that I repost this question here. Hopefully this subreddit won't appear on /r/subredditdrama nearly as frequently as /r/seattle does.

The title is straightforward, I think. Local media loves talking about "snow scenarios"; well, what are our thunderstorm scenarios? Also, why do our thunderstorms tend to be dry, why are electrical storms with abundant rainfall (like they get on the east coast) rarer still? I can think of very few occurrences of the "thunderstorm with drenching rainfall"; one was in 2012, and the other occurred the next year.

I have to get this off my chest: the income inequality that I see everyday. (x-post from r/Seattle)

Everyday there's a sweetheart of a lady who stands and holds her sign on the on-ramp near the U-District - she tells me I'm beautiful and to drive safe in my '90's Honda (yes, it's been stolen before). I make my way onto 520 and to Redmond/Woodinville area where I work for a Microsoft family. I pass by multimillion-dollar homes, drive next to Lamborghinis and Ferraris, and stop into Starbucks where the lady next to me is grabbing her iPhone out of her Louis Vuitton bag. I do my work, I go home where I take my dog to play fetch at the park; here, there are people from all walks of life without a home. Sometimes I say Hi. I then go home to my studio apartment where I pay 3.50/sq. Ft. in rent/mo and try to live within my means (I just graduated).

I can't help but reflect on the striking differences between here and there. It saddens me to no end

Bostonian Looking to Move To Seattle

Hi, Seattle Reddit. Are there any Boston-to-Seattle transplants in the area who would be willing to share their experiences with me? I am a current Bostonian looking to move to the Pacific Northwest, and Mr. SArche and I fell in love with Seattle when we visited last year. I have browsed the massive moving post on this forum already, but still had some questions that weren't answered there if you guys had a moment:

1) How does the rent situation compare in Seattle to Boston?

2) What is the best "beginner" neighborhood to live in transitioning out of Boston? Mr. SArche and I, for you ex-Bostonians, have lived in Somerville near Sullivan Square, Arlington and Watertown.

3) I currently work as a tech support lead in a call center and make about $28000/year. I would love to break more into the tech sector after getting more programming and UI design experience. Mr. SArche works as a barista and events guy for a local museum here and makes about $35000/year. Would this be enough to live off of in the Seattle area and be able to keep up with health insurance, student loans, etc.?

Thank you guys in advance for taking the time to look at my post!
